Boulder, CO: The Active Living Group, a division of Pocket Outdoor Media, became the first major media organization in North America to make every magazine subscription it sells carbon-neutral. The announcement was made today in conjunction with the Outdoor Retailer tradeshow as a kickoff to the group’s “Enough Already” consumer awareness campaign (www.enoughalready.wtf.)

Headlined by Yoga Journal, Backpacker, Clean Eating, Climbing, The Voice, and SNEWS, the Active Living Group has calculated the full cradle-to-grave footprint of each magazine and is eliminating an equivalent amount of greenhouse gasses for more than a half-million readers. “The time is right to take serious action for the environment,” said group vice president Sharon Houghton. “Our readers are passionate about healthy foods and forests, and they care deeply about the places they hike, climb, and garden. Recent months have inspired deep reflection on how we can make the world a better place, and it’s become clear that global warming affects everything we care about. Rising temperatures are intensifying storms and wildfires, harming communities of color, and heightening the severity of global pandemics. We’ve reached a point where concerned hikers, climbers, and cooks are saying, Enough already!”

The magazines have partnered with Cooler (www.cooler.dev), a climate technology firm whose software instantly calculates and neutralizes the carbon footprint of any product or service at checkout. This software enables businesses to make quick and credible progress on sustainability – and demonstrate the kind of verifiable action their customers are increasingly demanding. Verification comes in the form of carbon permits that Cooler purchases on behalf of its customers; each permit prevents industrial polluters from emitting 1 ton of carbon and is certified by RGGI, a regulatory consortium representing 14 Northeastern states.

“As climate advocates and outdoor enthusiasts, we’re so proud to support Sharon’s group,” said Cooler CEO Michel Gelobter. “Over the next year, these magazines will prevent the same amount of pollution as reducing highway driving by 7.3 million miles. And even better, our permit payments are reinvested in renewable energy development, which means the average Backpacker subscriber is effectively powering the next generation of clean technology.”

About Cooler

Founded by a team of climate experts and technologists, Cooler is a software company that helps businesses connect everyday shopping behavior to real action on sustainability. Cooler’s API and Shopify tools enable companies to show their customers the carbon footprint of any product or service while shopping – and to neutralize the footprint at checkout. Cooler’s footprinting is powered by tens of thousands of data points, AI learning, and a calculation engine developed with leading environmental scientists and organizations. Cooler neutralizes its partners’ footprints by purchasing regulated carbon permits that would otherwise go to industrial polluters, allowing them to exceed their emission caps.
